Nutrition & Weight Management

We’d like to ask you a few simple questions. First, what do you feed your pet? Are you sure it’s truly meeting his or her nutritional needs, or did you simply guess and grab something off the store shelf? What about weight? Could your companion stand to lose (or gain) a few pounds?

If you’re not sure about the answers to these questions, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, nutrition and weight control are among the most confusing topics for even the most seasoned of pet parents. You know that a balanced diet and the proper weight can add years to your pet’s life, but unless you’ve been trained in animal nutrition, managing this component of your pet’s health care can be challenging.

What you need is the help of an expert. Someone who can guide you through the process of determining what food would best meet your pet’s unique nutritional needs as well as what your companion’s ideal weight range should be. Pet Med Clinic offers professional nutritional counseling and weight management services to help take the guess work out of keeping your pet fit and healthy.

Start with the right diet…

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition. Every pet is different, and each animal has his or her own unique needs that must be met. The first step in our nutritional counseling services is determining what those specific needs are for your particular pet. We’ll do this by conducting a thorough exam and taking into consideration such factors as your companion’s breed, age, current weight and whether or not there are any existing medical conditions that we must address.

Once we have compiled all of this information, we can then develop a customized diet that will be designed to keep your pet at his or her optimum health. We may recommend the use of prescription diet products, as these contain many benefits that cannot be found in regular, over the counter pet food. We’ll also advise you on how much and how often you should be feeding your pet to avoid excess calorie intake and unnecessary weight gain.

Then, manage weight…

The next step in the process is weight control. Did you know that even a few extra pounds can spell trouble for your four-legged friend? Pets that are overweight are much more susceptible to a number of serious medical conditions, including arthritis and diabetes. Conversely, if your pet doesn’t weigh enough, he or she could be at a greater risk of becoming sick or injured. We will work with you to determine what your pet’s ideal weight range should be, and then develop a plan to help reach that goal and maintain it over time.

Maintenance is key…

Once we’ve got your pet’s plan in place, it’s important that we revisit our approach from time to time to make sure it’s still as effective as it was designed to be. As animals get older, their health care needs change, including those associated with nutrition and weight control. We’ll reevaluate your pet’s plan and make any necessary adjustments as needed so that we continue to achieve the results we want.

You want your loved one to live as many happy, healthy years as possible and so do we! It starts with a foundation of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle. Let us develop a customized diet and exercise plan to bring out the very best in your animal friend.
